Digital Experiment at Bell Labs

Gradually built up of digital white dots on a black background which finally turn into numbers, this work is a formal and technical experiment by Paik created inside Bell's pioneering research facilities in California. Paik was fascinated by the difference between digital and analogue long before the potential of digital had had any impact in the technology market place. While this work does not express the multi-colour bravura of other pieces, it does present Paik's interest in the science of technology and its material form. From the sound and light waves that create audio and image, to the data code that makes up digital, this work is a prime example of the artists interest in the building blocks that make up what we see and hear, as well as the end result.
