Commissioned for Video Positive 1995. Graham Hardwood’s Rehearsal of Memory is an interactive CD-ROM for which he recorded patients’ life experiences at Ashworth high security psychiatric hospital. Presenting the personal stories of many individuals, the piece culminates with the anonymous ‘personality’ of a computer, depersonalising experience such that it becomes merely data.
In giving space to the voices of those at the extreme of abnormal behaviour – serial killers, rapists, those considered a danger to themselves and to others – Hardwood’s work confronts us with our own unwillingness to recognise the existence of such behaviour in our society.
