Survival Scrapbooks

Artist Stefan Szczelkun presents a series of projected images from his Survival Scrapbooks: Food, Energy and Shelter (1972-74). Originally published in the early 1970s, his three Survival Scrapbooks are DIY manuals for autonomous living, covering practical topics from "bio-diesel-making" to "increasing your chi".

Written just before Szczelkun joined a small eco-commune, the Scrapbooks were first published by Unicorn Bookshop in Brighton and experimented with the book format - hole punches on the pages allowed for collecting in a binder and re-editing
with other material. The books, along with Szczelkun's later work with Scratch Orchestra and the mail art community, saw him as an offline pioneer of pre-internet collaborative tools and information sharing systems.
