You may already have spotted Australian artist Jemima Wyman's
'soft psychedelic weavings' which are covering the public spaces of
FACT as part of Liverpool Biennial 2012. Collective Coverings,
Communal Skin features intricate weavings made from second
hand hunting and camouflage clothing - all created by you.
Jemima is inviting the public to a series of workshops on 15 / 22 / 29 September
and 6 / 13 October from 12 - 4 in FACT. You'll learn a basic
weaving technique and have the opportunity to meet new people, and
have your weaving will be given pride of place on FACT's ground
floor for all to see. We also need donations of any old camouflage or hunting
clothing and material that can be transformed into weavings
that'll fill FACT's public areas for the duration of the
Biennial.
In 2005 Jemima received the Anne & Gordon Samstag International
Visual Arts Scholarship. This unique award is awarded to Australian
Artists to support and allow them to develop their skills outside
of Australia. During these studies she gained an MFA from the
famous Cal Arts, co-founded Camlab with Ana Mayer. Simultaneiously,
she developed her use of colour, scale, material appropriation -
all of which feature in her Biennial exhibition Collective Coverings, Communal
Skin.
Jemima Wyman regularly uses fabric associated with conflict in her
work to investigate its political potential. Her past work has seen
fabric being used as a stage for video projection, the creation of
'pour' paintings, wall coverings, seating and as part of a piece
called Vulva Girl!
