Nobody saw John Wick coming back in 2015. From the trailers, it looked to be another in a long line of by-the-numbers action thrillers starring former A-listers hoping to salvage what was left of their careers. But when it hit the screens, the result was a major surprise; the film was a deliriously entertaining treat, featuring a dead-pan Keanu Reeves in the role of his career and riotous, tongue-in-cheek dialogue. Every action sequence topped the previous one, and clearly director Chad Stahelski considered nothing 'too over-the-top' for his cinematic assault on the senses.
In the film, John Wick (Reeves) loses his wife to cancer, who sent him a puppy before she died as a way for him to deal with her death. Sadly, Russian gangsters break into his house, steal his car and kill his dog. Unfortunately, that is, for them; Wick is an extremely skilled retired hit-man known as 'The Boogeyman', and he will stop at nothing to have his revenge.
The upcoming sequel has a similarly awesome/silly premise: John Wick is again forced out of retirement, only this time he is sworn by a blood oath to help a former associate seize control of the International Guild of Assassins. Whilst we are unsure exactly where the plot takes us, we can be sure that there will be more carnage, more action and more one-liners than you can shake a proverbial stick at. In fact, the film is already being praised by some American critics as one of the greatest action sequels ever made.
In short, if you are a fan of action movies, or even just a fan of extremely kinetic pure cinema, John Wick: Chapter 2 will undoubtedly prove to be a treat to match (or maybe even eclipse) the original.
