In 2009 FACT, Cornerhouse and folly came together to found Abandon Normal Devices as a catalyst for new approaches to art-making and digital invention, creating groundbreaking projects that challenge the definition of art.

The last iteration of the biennial roaming festival of cinema, art and digital culture was held here at FACT in 2013, and featured new work by Mark Boulos, and Nicolas Maigret and Brendan Howell alongside a programme of film screenings.

For 2015 the festival travels to Grizedale Forest in the heart of the Lake District, with a programme of art, cinema, trails and experiences that will explore the secret architecture of the forest through the eyes and ears of its plants, animals and machines. A site for discovery and adventure, you’ll be able to experience the forest anew through art works from world-class artists created especially for the site.

The programme is built to challenge perceptions and excite discussion around nature, technology, science and the unseen. You can walk, cycle, run or trek around the site, as works will be scattered throughout the forest for you to discover. The festival features new commissions and artworks by artists Liam Young and Tim Maughan, Marshmallow Laser Feast, BridA, Brandon Ballongee, Jen Southern, Matthew Plummer-Fernandez and Isabella Rossellini.
