Classic Cinema: O Lucky Man! screening tonight
Every Tuesday, Picturehouse at FACT screen the best independent, cult and arthouse cinema as part of their Discover Tuesday series. Tonight's film is Lindsay Anderson’s 1978 classic, O Lucky Man!
18 August 2014
Starring Michael McDowell, O Lucky Man! tells the story of an ambitious businessman’s efforts to succeed and his bizarre and dangerous journey through Britain’s class system. The film is a follow up to If… with Malcolm McDowell reprising his role as the ‘everyman’ Mick Travis.
After Imperial Coffee’s head salesman in the northeast dies, Travis is offered the job after impressing the boss with his charm and enthusiasm. He sets out to find his fortune only to discover military intelligence agents, lonely housewives, medical experiments, a secret sex club for businessmen and a travelling rock band led by the former Animal Keyboardist, Alan Price.
The films bizarre and surreal undercurrent is heightened by the fact that the majority of the film’s stars play two or three different characters.
O Lucky Man! is ‘sometimes comic, sometimes grotesque but consistently intriguing, this is a spectacular, sprawling satire built around its surreal set-pieces and driven by a charismatic performance by McDowell.’ The film won numerous awards including 2 BAFTA’s and it was nominated for the Palme D’Or.
One critic described the film as ‘No less than an epic look at society’ praising McDowell’s performance as characterful and full of nuance.
O Lucky Man! is a unique, surreal and often bizarre cinematic classic. This week’s Discover Tuesday screening is an incredibly rare chance to see the film up on the big screen, don’t miss out!
