The Raid 2 3

2011’s The Raid is now widely regarded as one of the best action movies ever made. The story of an elite Special Forces unit’s raid on a tower block is unique, brutal and one of the most enjoyable action movies of recent years.

Welsh Director Gareth Evan returns with The Raid 2 that ‘delivers more of everything audiences loved about its predecessor’. The story picks up just two hours after the close of The Raid with Rama forced to re-enter the criminal underworld to root out the gang leaders behind Jakarta’s crime wave.

The action sequences in The Raid 2 are unlike anything you’ve seen before with film critic Amber Wilkinson saying ‘Hyper-violent it may be but there is beauty in its brutality.’ Fans of action and martial arts cinema will love The Raid 2, it is more nuanced and dramatic than its predecessor whilst retaining the ‘mind-bogglingly violent martial arts action’.

In an interview with Den of Geek, Evans describes his vision when starting out on a sequel,’I wanted to expand more, and tell this big story about these big, sprawling crime sagas. It’s about these families, and father and son issues, and it’s about all these different relationships. It’s all about setting up all these chess pieces, so later on, when it starts to kick off completely, then we’re ready to tumble down this rabbit hole of violence and the consequences of them.’ Numerous critics have described the film as the Godfather of martial arts movies and with a sequel already planned, the position of The Raid series as some of the best action movies ever made seems assured.
