12 Years A Slave: The Extraordinary True Story of Solomon Northup
12 February 2014
12 Years A Slave is the incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and his freedom.
Solomon Northup was a free man, living in New York and working as a carpenter and fiddle player. Two men offer him a lucrative contract to tour with their travelling circus after hearing him perform. During a night of celebration, the two men drug Northup, and kidnap him.
The film follows his journey from New York, to the cotton plantations of Louisiana where he is sold into Slavery. He is passed around by plantation owners who believe their right to abuse slaves is biblically sanctioned. His torment and torture is shown in often shocking detail by McQueen who has said ‘If I hadn’t done that, I would have done a disservice, because that evidence had to be shown’.
Featuring an all star cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Brad Pitt, Paul Dano, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch and Lupita Nyong'o who is nominated for the ‘Rising Star’ award at the 2014 BAFTA’s.
12 Years A Slave is now showing at Picturehouse at FACT and tickets are available now from the Box Office, online and by phone on 0871 902 5737.
