A return to form from Woody Allen
26 September 2013
It’s fair to say that Woody Allen’s 48 films have been of varying qualities from the modern classic that is Annie Hall to 1987’s ‘unwatchable’ September, but with Blue Jasmine, Allen has created one of his best films in years, if not ever!
Cate Blanchett leads an incredible cast, which includes Alec Baldwin, Louis C.K and Sally Hawkins. Jasmine, played by Blanchett, is a deluded formerly wealthy New York socialite who has fallen on hard times and ends up living in her sister’s small San Francisco apartment. Even with her addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs, Jasmine forces her patronising advice on anyone who will listen, leading to resentment and anger from her sister and her boyfriend Chili.
Peter Bradshaw, writing in The Guardian, described the movie as ‘the real deal, an actual Woody Allen film, the kind we once looked forward to, took for granted, then despaired of ever seeing again.’ Blue Jasmine has a ‘Confirmed Fresh’ rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and incredible reviews across the board. Cate Blanchett’s performance has been described as one of the best performances of her career, with Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers saying ‘Want to see great acting, from comic to tragic and every electrifying stop in between? See Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine.’
