8 August 2013

The UK’s leading Documentary Festival, Sheffield Doc/Fest, have selected two of the best films from their 2013 programme, inspired by our Turning FACT Inside Out exhibition.

Google and the World Brain, showing Wednesday 14 August at 6.30pm, tells the story of Google’s attempt to create an online library for mankind featuring every book ever written. Their efforts came undone when it was discovered that they were scanning copyrighted books and not paying the authors and so they were taken to court in 2011.

Director Ben Lewis interviews technologists, journalists, academics and the ‘ragbag army of authors helped by the occasional librarian’ who went up against Google, to get behind the scenes of the most ambitious project ever conceived on the Internet. The film considers the danger, drama and possibilities of the Internet and how it will change everyone’s life in the future.

Sheffield Doc/Fest’s film programmer Hussain Currimbhoy will introduce the film and host a post screening Q&A with the director Ben Lewis.

Tickets for the film are available now online, by phone on 0871 902 5737 or from the Box Office.
