New Release: Electrick Children
20 July 2012
In Rachel's mormon world of the mid 1990s she discovers the cassette player for the very first time when her pastor father uses it to interview her. Fascinated by this new contraption, she secretly uses it to listen to a cover of Blondie's Hanging on the Telephone that she discovers hidden in the house. She has an epiphany and beleives that the song has provided God with a link to her womb, making her pregnant.
So what happens next? When her parents find out, they try and force her into an arranged marriage but instead Rachel runs away to the closest city, Las Vegas on a hunt for the man who sings on the mysterious tape.
The unusal mash-up of religion and rock and roll works suprisingly well in Electrick Children and it has all the makings of an indie classic. Director Rebecca Thomas (who was raised a mormon) has shot the film in desaturated colour - a nice touch mimicing the washed out desert landscapes.
