Critical Mass is this year's North West Visual Arts Open, which spreads across Liverpool, Manchester and Cumbria/Lancashire over the upcoming months. Leading galleries, studio groups, artists and curators in each of the locations will present three clustered programmes of events to open access to local and international artists and their work.  Sounds like a good excuse to wake up from winter hibernation and to get out and about the city!

The programme will kick off in Liverpool next weekend and the first event will be here at FACT launching the new Open CuRate It  programme.

Cracking the Curatorial

Friday 2 March / 2pm-5pm / The Box: What is the role of an arts institution in facilitating community connections and generating frameworks for public meaning making through art and media? Speakers include Nina Edge (artist and community activist), Abigail Christenson (Young People Curator at Tate Liverpool) and Neil Morrin (Defnet Media.)

Other events over the weekend include the opening of The Bluecoat's Topophobia  exhibition as well as events at Arena Gallery, The Tate, Wolsentholme Creative Space and The Royal Standard. Check out the full programme via the North West Open blog. We are especially looking forward to the after parties including the Acetate Steps Party which is being billed as a celebration of the mix tape!
