The Referees: The latest from Picturehouse Docs
5 September 2011
Ever wondered just how the referees make those split-second decisions under scrutiny of the whole world? The Referees follows a group of match officials, included Brit Howard Webb, during Euro 2008 football championships in Austria and Switzerland.\r\n
The documentary has access to the on-pitch audio as well as off the pitch footage so you can hear exactly what the refs are saying to the players (cue eerie scenes of football matches will turned down crowd noise). One clash on the pitch even leads to a reporter telling a referee, “Our prime minister said they wanted to kill you!” The film also takes a look at the little known about knock-out process that the referees are subjected to by UEF in order to ref the final stages of the tournament.\r\n
The Referees is a riveting look at the most popular sport on the planet from a new angle. Showing at 6.15pm tomorrow, you can buy tickets online here, in person at the box office or by calling 0871 902 5737.
