The Tree of Life is the Palme d’Or winning latest masterpiece from maverick director, Terrence Malick (take a look here for his career in pictures). The film stars Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastian as a Texan couple whose son Jack must learn how to cope with sickness, death and the myriad obstacles that life presents.

Not so much a film with a narrative, The Tree of Life has been described as a philosophical experience and has drawn comparisons Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey for its sci-fi and surrealist theme. Douglas Trumball who did the visual effects for 2001 as well as Close Encounters of the Third Kind has been brought onboard for The Tree of Life, which we think would be a reason to catch the film by itself.

We weren’t lucky enough to see the film at Cannes unlike the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw but if experience of the film as “visionary cinema on an unashamedly huge scale” is anything to go by, we really cannot wait to see it this weekend.  We have also heard mentions of dinosaur scenes and meteor strikes!!
