As part of their continuing support of independent cinema across the UK, Volkswagen See Film Differently will be taking over FACT’s cinema and bar for a Beginners Preview event this Thursday. As well as the chance to see the film before it’s release on Friday, ticket-holders will also be treated to popcorn and drinks plus an exhibition of director Mike Mills’ artwork which features in the film.

\r\n

Mills is a man with many strings to his bow. Before directing films, he directed music videos for artists like Yoko Ono and Air. He is also an illustrator in his own right, creating the cover art for the Beastie Boys recent album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two as well as the 1995 Sonic Youth’s Washing Machine.

\r\n

Beginners is full of Mills’ witty character illustrations and he has also put together a book which also includes ones which weren’t shown in the film. We are lucky enough to be hosting an exclusive exhibition of these illustrations that launches at the event and runs until the end of the month, the only place for you to see these illustrations in person before the book’s release. For a sneak preview, a Mills illustration is splashed over the front cover of The Guardian’s Guide this week.

THEN if free drinks and popcorn, a film and an exhibition wasn’t enough, there will be music from Liverpool’s very own DJ Samizdat and illustrator, Will Daw, will also be taking part, creating live art in the bar.
