Experimental guitarist, Oren Ambarchi provides the composition for Worlds in the Making, the new artwork by semiconductor which will be showing in Gallery 1 from this Friday. We wanted to find out more...

Semiconductor originally started out musicians, creating live film scores and performances where they conducted sound experiments.  Today, Semiconductor bring together sound and imagery to create their works and have commissioned experimental guitarist, Oren Ambarchi to create the sound for Worlds in the Making.

Like Semiconductor who shun traditional video methods, Ambarchi seeks to push the boundaries of conventional instrumental approaches. We thought it was very telling that on his website it doesn’t say that he plays the guitar; instead it says that he focuses on the exploration of the guitar. The Wire describes his work as,  “re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it’s no longer easily identifiable as itself. Instead, it’s a laboratory for extended sonic investigation”

Ambarchi’s soundtrack for
Worlds in the Making is still closely under wraps but we were able to speak to Ruth about it and she said,  “Our collaborations with musicians have evolved to bring a suggestion of human interpretation to the work, emotional responses to these worlds in flux. This is certainly the role that Oren Ambarchi’s sound has in Worlds in the Making, he brings this incredible energy”.

For more information about Oren Ambarchi, you can take a look at his website and we found this interesting interview on The Wire’s website.

Semiconductor: Worlds in the Making opens at FACT on 1 July and runs until 11 September. Galleries are open daily from 12.00pm – 6.00pm and entry is free
