Three films to celebrate the life of Vincent Price
24 May 2011
Culture Shock, the series that brought you cult films such as Rubber, Troll II and Bride of Frankenstein, is continuing this month with three very special one-off screenings celebrating what would have been actor Vincent Price’s 100th birthday! Price died in 1993, three years after filming Edward Scissorhands, but his spine-chilling presence still lives on today….
The Tingler (15)
Friday 27 May
'The Tingler' is a centipede-like parasite generated by fear. It grows quickly in the base of the human spine, killing its host. The Tingler can only be released by a loud scream. Doctor Warren Chapin, (played by Price), gets the chance to experiment on deaf and mute Martha. Induced with LSD nightmares and unable to scream, Martha experiences the true scale of The Tingler as it grows inside her. The scream-fest trailer has been giving us the creeps in the FACT office already; I think I can feel a tingler coming on…
The original poster for the film said “When the screen screams, you’ll scream too . . . if you value your life!” You have been warned.
The Last Man on Earth (PG) plus live score from Animat
Tuesday 07 June
The Last Man on Earth was the first of the three adaptations of Richard Matheson’s novel “I am Legend”. As you know, scientist Robert Morgan, is the only man immune to a plague that has transformed the entire population of the Earth into vampire-like creatures. This version is by far the scariest, if only for the question…. “can a zombie woman’s hunger for love repopulate the earth?”
“This is the world of the living dead and you, or Vincent Price, may be The Last Man on Earth”
A live score will accompany this screening from Animat, a collaboration between The Only Michael and Soyo, as part of their own Price’s birthday celebrations.\r\n
Edward Scissorhands (PG)
Tuesday 14 June
Tim Burton wrote the role of the inventor in Edward Scissorhands specifically for Price and the film even features Price’s daughter, Victoria, as a TV reporter. Johnny Depp stars as Edward, a gentle young man who has scissors for hands after the death of his inventor left him incomplete. Edward is taken in by a suburban family and falls in love with their teenage daughter, Kim. Edward Scissorhands is a surprisingly beautiful film about a really not-so beautiful man.
