You may have seen our special screening of Penny Marshall's 1991 film Awakenings last month as part of the Persistence of Vision exhibition. We've now formed a new relationship with this remarkable true story in a film project for Rambert Dance Company.

FACT recently delivered a new HD film commission for Rambert, based on their new show Awakenings, which premiered at the Lowry, Salford last Wednesday.

The film goes behind the scenes at Rambert and unmasks the process in putting together this newly commissioned work.  Including a specially composed score, Awakenings is based upon the true stories documented in the book of the same name by Dr Oliver Sacks', and made famous by the 1990 Hollywood film.

In 1918 a mysterious sleeping-sickness epidemic swept across the world leaving hundreds of survivors in an unexplained paralysis. This moving new work is inspired by the powerful true stories of a group of very individual patients, catapulted temporarily but dramatically from their long slumber into their own emotionally-charged awakenings.

FACT travelled down to Rambert and worked closely alongside them to create a film which would accompany the show.  Awakenings had its world première at the The Lowry, Salford on 22 September 2010 and will tour the UK throughout 2010/2011.
